MHSAA 6A third round, best-of-three

DeSoto Central 4, Oxford 0 (DeSoto Central leads 1-0)

Cade Smith tossed a no-hitter in the victory for DeSoto Central, while tagging Hays Roth of Oxford for nine hits. Kamren James scored two runs. Dylan Hale and Blaze Jordan had three hits to lead the Jaguar offense, with Jordan hitting a solo homerun. Hale drove in two of DeSoto Central’s four runs. Smith struck out three Chargers in the victory. Game two is Friday at 7 p.m. in Oxford.

Northwest Rankin 8, Hernando 7 (Northwest Rankin leads 1-0)

The Cougars scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning for the win, despite a Ben Brantley two-run homer for Hernando. Brantley drove in four runs in the contest and Conner Spencer led the offense with four hits. The Tigers took a 3-1 lead in the second inning, but trailed 7-3 after four innings. Northwest Rankin scored four runs in the fourth innings to answer Hernando’s pair of runs in each of the second, sixth and seventh innings, the final two had tied the contest going into the bottom half of the final inning. Dylan Fiveash struck out 11 Northwest Rankin batters in 5.2 innings on the mound for the Tigers. Game two is Friday at 7 p.m. in Hernando.

MHSAA 5A third round baseball playoffs, best-of-three

Saltillo 11, Lewisburg 7 (Saltillo leads 1-0)

Saltillo scored four runs in the third and five more in the sixth inning. Lewisburg plated four runs in the fifth inning. Jack Olson led the Lewisburg offense with three hits and two RBIs. Ethan Kreyer struck out four in 3.2 innings pitched. Game two is Friday at 5 p.m. in Saltillo.

TSSAA Division II-A West Region baseball playoffs

Northpoint Christian 2, Sacred Heart of Jesus, Tenn. 1

Northpoint scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for the win. The Trojans were held to just two hits. Landon Murrell drove in both Northpoint runs with a walk off base hit in the bottom of the seventh. Logan Smith struck out three on the mound for the Trojans, which continue in the winner’s bracket of the tournament Friday evening at Tipton-Rosemark.

TSSAA Division II-A West Region playoffs

Fayette Academy 3, Northpoint Christian 1

Fayette Academy rallied with single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to recover from a 1-0 Northpoint lead after one inning. Sarah Gill drove in the Lady Trojans’ only run of the game.

SPORTS ETC.: DeSoto Central will have new basketball coaches next season with school board approval Thursday of the hiring of Independence head coach Blake Ormon as boys' head coach and Starkville assistant Gwendolyn Petty was named to lead the DeSoto Central girls' basketball program. William Bentley and Paul Hayden coached their respective programs this past season.
