The Mississippi RiverKings were set to finish their weekend series against Peoria Saturday at the Landers Center in Southaven, the conclusion of a two-game weekend set that began Friday night. Game time is at 7:30 p.m. and is the final of four consecutive games the two teams will have against each other, as Mississippi traveled to Peoria last weekend to play the Rivermen in a pair of games.
Friday's game was still scheduled to be played in spite of the inclement weather. Team officials reported only the West parking lot would be used and there would be no post-game skate.
Fans with tickets to Friday's game who could not make the contest would be allowed to redeem their tickets for another RiverKings' contest this season, provided they give the team 24-hour notice before the game they wanted to see. Interested fans were asked to call the team office at 662-342-1755 for more information.
RiverKings fans attending this weekend’s series are best to invest in a program, as the team’s roster has continued to evolve with the recent addition of two new players in a trade with the Columbus (Ga.) Cottonmouths announced Thursday.
Team officials announced that defenseman Cody Castro and forward Corey Tyrell were being added to the roster in exchange for forward Alexander Taulien.
The 24-year-old Castro, a native of Peoria, Ariz., is in his first season of professional hockey after playing last year in the Canadian collegiate ranks.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound blueliner appeared in 29 games last year at the South Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), where he scored two goals for seven points.
This season, in 21 games with the Cottonmouths, Castro has one assist and 21 penalty minutes.
Tyrell, a 26-year-old native of Airdrie, Alberta, is also in his first season of professional hockey and was a teammate of Castro at South Alberta Institute of Technology.
The 6-foot, 200-pound forward played three years for the SAIT Trojans, accumulating 27 goals for 54 points in 71 games.
Prior to college, Tyrell played junior hockey for Flin Flon, Manitoba in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and at Prince George in the Western Hockey League.
For the Cottonmouths, Tyrell had four goals and five points in 19 games.
Taulien departs for Columbus after playing in four games for the RiverKings this season following his acquisition on Dec. 23. He finished his time in Mississippi with one goal and two points.
