Hernando 11, Starkville 1 (Tigers win series 2-0)

Tigers to play South Panola in the second round of the playoffs, starting Thursday at South Panola.

MHSAA 5A first round, best of three

Olive Branch 11, Cleveland Central 0, five innings (Quistors win series 2-0)

Olive Branch broke open the game with five runs in the third inning. Alex Orman and Johnny Setchfield each had two hits in the win, Orman drove in four runs and Gavin Mink had three RBIs for the Conquistadors. Pitcher AJ Kaelin fanned two Wolves in the win, as Olive Branch will play at Ridgeland Thursday to start the second round of best-of-three baseball.

Regular season

Northpoint Christian 6, Lausanne Collegiate, Tenn. 3

Trojans scored four times in the fourth inning and twice more in the sixth. Carson Fox, Blake Cherry with two hits each for Northpoint, which got two RBIs from Aulden Easterling. Pitcher Logan Smith struck out eight Lausanne batters in a complete-game victory.

MHSAA 6A first round

Hernando 10, Starkville 5 (Tigers win series 2-0)

Lady Tigers scored four times each in the fourth and fifth innings, while Starkville committed seven errors. Madison Burrus and Rylee Eyster led the offense for Hernando with two hits each, Eyster and Maggie Grubbs had two RBIs. Pitcher Julia Shaw fanned 11 in the complete-game performance for Hernando.

MHSAA 5A second round, best of three

Lafayette 13, Lake Cormorant 10 (Lafayette leads 1-0)

Lafayette scored five runs in the second and seven more in the third inning of the winner. Lake Cormorant recorded 10 hits but committed nine errors in the loss. Reese Woods led the Lady Gator offense with four hits, while pitcher Bree Raines fanned two in six innings of work.

Germanton 5, Center Hill 1 (Germantown leads 1-0)

Germantown scored two in the third inning and two more in the seventh of the victory. Katelyn Moss struck out eight Lady Mavs in seven innings of work.

Grenada 2, Lewisburg 1 (Grenada leads 1-0)

Grenada scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning after Lewisburg took a 1-0 lead in the second inning.  Oakley Laughter scored Lewisburg’s lone run in the top of the second inning, as freshman Hailey Lott had two hits, including a double, and the Lady Patriots’ only RBI. Pitcher Gabby Dickerson struck out five in seven innings pitched.  

SPORTS ETC.: DeSoto Central baseball will start its playoff series with Warren Central this weekend as the number three team in the country. That is according to USA Today’s rankings of high school baseball squads. The rise is up from sixth in the previous rankings, according to the national publication.

Lafayette edged Lewisburg 4-3 in the North Half team tennis finals in Oxford Monday. The individual state tennis meet will be next week.
