* The Mississippi RiverKings’ season came to an end Sunday with Huntsville’s 5-2 victory in the SPHL Challenge Round series. The RiverKings fell in three games to the Havoc, which selected Mississippi as its opponent in the Challenge Round format used by the league this year. After a delay of starting the series one day due to Landers Center ice plant problems, the RiverKings won the opening game 4-1, but lost 4-3 in overtime Saturday at Huntsville, followed by Sunday’s loss to end the year.
* Baseball players from Lewisburg, Southaven and DeSoto Central are part of this year’s 5A/6A North All-Star Team that will play the South in the Crossroads Diamond Club D.M. Howie All-Star Baseball Games on Saturday, June 9 at William Carey University in Hattiesburg. The DeSoto County all stars include Bryce Brock and Landon Wilkerson of Lewisburg, Hendrix Cooley of Southaven, along with Peyton Mills and Matthew Taylor of DeSoto Central.
* Braden Thornberry has become the first Ole Miss men’s golfer to be a semifinalist for the prestigious Ben Hogan Award, given to the top collegiate golfer in the country. The DeSoto Central alum is the defending NCAA men’s golf champion.
* Former Horn Lake basketball standout Dee Montgomery Wednesday signed with Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne, or IPFW, to play there next season. Montgomery led Arkansas State University Mid-South to a fifth-place finish in this year’s NJCAA national basketball tournament. He led ASU Mid-South in scoring at 15.2 points-per-game, received NJCAA All-American honors and a nomination to the National Junior College All-Star game in Las Vegas.
