Vera C. Hawkins left this life on March 5, 2019. She attended Rust College High School and graduated Rust College in 1951. She began her career as an educator in Marks. After six years she came home to the DeSoto County school system and taught at Hernando Central. She received her Masters of Education from the University of Mississipi in 1979. She continued teaching in the DeSoto County school system until 1992 when she retired. Her teaching and service did not end with her retirement from DeSoto County Schools. She was the founder of the Hernando Concerned Community Volunteers (CVC). She was an AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) worker. She tutored neighborhood children and actively worked for the body of Christ at Second Baptist Church as long as her health enabled her to. Over the years she served as Sunday School teacher, church clerk and church secretary. She is survived by her son Keith R. Hawkins Sr. and daughter-in-law Michelle Hawkins; two grandsons, Keith R. Hawkins Jr. and Raymond T. Hawkins II; her sister, Lelia B. “Pat” Wooldridge; a niece, Andrea C.R. “Carla” Wooldridge-Frazier; four great-nephews, Ryan Nicholas, Gabriel and Hayden; two first cousins, James Crawford and Evelyn Wilson; a special cousin Helen Speed. The homegoing celebration is Saturday, March 9 at 1 p.m. at Zion Hill M.B. Church, 6030 Robertson Gin Rd., Hernando.
