Harley Edward “Doc” Purvis, Jr., age 88, of Hernando, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Desoto. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2016 from 5 to 7 p.m at Hernando United Methodist Church, 1890 Mt Ple.asant Rd, Hernando. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2016, also at Hernando United Methodist Church, with David Cox officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Hernando Memorial Park in Hernando. Hernando Funeral Home has charge. Doc Purvis was born June 1, 1928 in Mendes, Ga. He graduated from nearby Glennville High School in Glennville, Ga. Doc then went on to attend The University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. At age 20 he received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Alabama Polytechnic Institute at Auburn, Ala. After graduation he moved to Hernando and on June 11, 1955 he married the former Anne Holmes Chatham of Hernando. He went on to practice veterinary medicine for a total of 67 years and retired in 2015. He loved attending Sunday School and Worship Services. He was a true outdoorsman who loved to go pond fishing, and to hunt quail, doves, ducks, and deer. He was also an avid reader. Doc Purvis is survived by his beloved wife, Anne Chatham Purvis; his oldest son, Edward C. Purvis; his only daughter, Mindy P. Merkel; his youngest son, Claude M. Purvis; and his only granddaughter, Mary Anne Purvis.
