The Dec. 12 special election to fill the open Horn Lake Board of Aldermen seat from Ward One will have two candidates on the ballot.
City officials reported that Michael Guice and LaWana Boone filed and qualified to have their names on the ballot by the Nov. 22 deadline.
The seat became vacant when Alderwoman Amy Lay resigned from the board after she informed Mayor Allen Latimer and the board that she had relocated away from Horn Lake and now lives in Nesbit.
Lay had served on the Horn Lake Board of Aldermen since 2005.
This will be the second time this year that Guice has run for a political office in Horn Lake. A retired law enforcement officer, Guice ran unsuccessfully for mayor back in May, as Latimer was re-elected in the municipal election.
Guice, a Marine Corps veteran and FBI National Academy graduate, had been in law enforcement for more than 30 years, but retired four years ago to care for his ailing mother.
Boone will be entering the political arena for the first time. She is a native of Memphis who has lived in Horn Lake the past 13 years. Her background includes working as a flight attendant with American Airlines for 25 years, but most recently has become an established freelance writer and has expertise in marketing, event planning and communications.
The election Dec. 12 will be held at Goodman Road Baptist Church in Horn Lake, 4368 Goodman Road. Polling hours will be from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
City offices will be open on Saturday, Dec. 2 and again on Saturday, Dec. 9 from 8 a.m.-noon for absentee voting.
Since the Board has a regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 19, it is likely the election winner would be sworn in and take office at the beginning of that meeting.
