Southaven aldermen are expected to appoint Assistant Fire Chief Danny Scallions as the city’s new Fire Chief at its Tuesday evening meeting.
Mayor Darren Musselwhite confirmed Monday that current Fire Chief Roger Thornton is retiring in January and Scallions is in line to become the new fire chief upon Thornton’s retirement.
Thornton has been Southaven’s fire chief since 2015, when the late Ron White retired from the position. Thornton was hired as a firefighter in the Southaven department in June 1980 and became a shift commander at Station 1 in 1983.
Two years later, Thornton became a captain and was promoted to deputy chief in May 2010.
Thornton has both graduated from and been an instructor for several fire training schools and has received a number of accolades during his career.
Tuesday’s agenda for the Southaven Board of Aldermen will also include the review of the Request For Proposals for the BankPlus Amphitheater at Snowden Grove.
Musselwhite recently asked for and was given approval to seek proposals for a concert provider. Green Machine Concerts, a Southaven-based entertainment promoter and concert provider, has represented the city and the amphitheater since it first opened. A new agreement between the city and Green Machine has not been made and the mayor moved to ask for other providers.
The agenda also includes an executive session to consider personnel and litigation in the Southaven Police Department and economic development with a potential business location in the city.
Tuesday’s meeting in the board room at 8710 Northwest Drive will begin at 6 p.m.
