Southaven Police have arrested a 14-year-old juvenile from Memphis and charged him with vehicle theft after a Sunday incident in the Cherry Tree Lane area of the city.

Police Monday reported officers were called to the 400 block of Cherry Tree Lane, west of Elmore Road in the Plum Point Villages area, at about 3:30 p.m. on a report of a stolen vehicle in the area of Elmore and Goodman roads.

Police stated the suspect driver, after taking the vehicle, tried to enter the parking lot of a restaurant and other nearby businesses in an attempt to hide from officers and by doing so, lost control of the vehicle.

He struck several parked cars and a sign before being stopped and taken into custody by officers after a brief struggle, police said.

During the struggle, police reported the juvenile assaulted a Southaven officer who was assisted by an off-duty officer from Arkansas who was in the vicinity.

The suspect has been taken to the DeSoto County Juvenile Detention Center to be held.

Charges against the teenager include taking away a motor vehicle, felony fleeing and simple assault of a public servant.
