The now-vacant former home of the WIN Job Center on Highway 51 in Southaven will become the new precinct location for the Southaven Police Department, similar to the station near Snowden Grove Park. The main headquarters will remain on Northwest Drive in Southaven.

Southaven city officials are about to add a new police station to serve the western part of Mississippi’s third-largest city.

It was recently announced that the recently-vacated WIN Job Center building at 7320 Highway 51 North will become Police West Precinct.

Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite stated in his recent Mayor’s Report blog post the move comes about with a need for more police visibility and an opportunity with the WIN Job Center’s departure to a new location.

“Another significant factor considered for this decision is the increased criminal activity in the original part of our city along Highway 51 and nearby residential neighborhoods,” Musselwhite stated. “This is a common trend as cities age, but will not be accepted in Southaven. The most effective crime deterrent is Police presence.”

Employment officials have terminated the lease with the city for their former building and are now located at 5847 Getwell Road, Building B, Suite 3, in Southaven.

“‘Original Southaven’ is where it all began for us and will continue to play a vital role in the overall health and success of our city,” Musselwhite said.  “The Police Department’s need for more building space and the WIN Job Center’s decision to terminate their lease agreement for the City’s building located at 7320 Highway 51 North were two factors involved with a recent decision to add our new Police West Precinct.”

The Police Department’s headquarters will remain on Northwest Drive near City Hall and the East Precinct will continue its operations as it has on May Boulevard near Snowden Grove Park.

Plans are for the new precinct to be moved into and to begin operations within three months.

“This building is currently under construction for the appropriate build-out for Police needs and will be occupied within approximately 90 days,” Musselwhite said.
