Southaven police are investigating a weekend incident where a man died in the aftermath of a safety check on I-55.
Shortly after 2:15 a.m. Saturday morning, officers saw a vehicle near the center median, stopped and partially blocking the roadway of I-55 southbound about a mile south of Church Road.
Police report the officers stopped to check and offer assistance to the driver, but while at the scene, it was determined he might be under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
The driver was asked to step out of the vehicle, but he refused to do so and began combative, which started a struggle, according to police.
During the struggle, police report the driver began to suffer from “some type of medical emergency” and then became unresponsive.
Officers then called for an ambulance and tried to give aid until the ambulance arrived and took the driver to Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto.
Efforts to revive the driver continued on the trip to the hospital, but the man was pronounced dead by an emergency room doctor at the hospital.
Police say the investigation is continuing into the incident.
