Man in jail

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is said to be investigating the death of a 33-year-old inmate at the DeSoto County Detention Center on Thursday evening.

Chief Inspector Roger Hutchins with the DeSoto County Sheriff's Department's Criminal Investigation Division said the inmate was discovered to be unresponsive in the medical holding area of the DeSoto County Sheriff's Department Adult Detention Facility.

"The prisoner was transported to the Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto emergency room where he was later pronounced dead," Hutchins said.

Hutchins said the inmate was being housed in the medical area of the DeSoto County Adult Detention Center due to a preexisting medical condition.

The name was not released due to pending family notification.

DeSoto County Coroner Jeff Pounders said the man was discovered in the holding area about 11:30 p.m. and was transported to Baptist DeSoto where he was pronounced dead at approximately 12:30 p.m.
