This past year marked a very special turning point for one of the largest churches in the DeSoto County area as the former Getwell Road United Methodist Church became Getwell Church.
Getwell Church began its new chapter on June 5, 2017 but its mission and passion remains the same, according to longtime pastor Bill Beavers, who spoke with DeSoto Times-Tribune staff writer Bob Bakken shortly after the name change took effect.
It's a path that Beavers and wife Becky have tried to follow since Beavers, a native of New Albany, first heard the call to the ministry at a very young age.
"I heard the call to follow Jesus when I was 10 and sitting on one of those 10-cent ride-a-horse things outside the storefront church my family helped to launch," said Beavers, recounting the moment he answered God's call. "God's voice was clear in my call."
For Beavers, the transition is just another step in seeking the truth and spirit of God's Word.
The church's web site lists its tenet of beliefs that the church believes are in accordance with the Gospel.
"We are a Christian body of Jesus followers, holding to long-held Biblically orthodox beliefs. We also affirm the perspectives of the Wesleyan movement—holding together grace and truth, forgiveness and holy living, evangelism and the loving ministry of meeting the needs of the poor and hurting.
"We believe that God's grace is the foundation of our relationship with Him. God makes the first move toward us, and He enables us to respond by receiving His love or walking away.
"We believe that we are justified and forgiven of our sin by faith in Jesus Christ, not because of anything that we do, but solely because Jesus lived a life of perfect obedience, sacrificed His life by dying on the cross, and because He rose from the dead three days later.
"We believe that God loves us so much, that He does more than forgive us. He gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit, makes us one with Him, and He brings actual transformation to our lives.
All of this is a work of God's grace.
"We believe that the church is the hope of the world. The church is the movement of those who trust in Jesus Christ for salvation, who follow Him in obedience, who worship Him, and are sent out into the world with the good news of what Jesus has done. The church is not a club for people who are perfect. The church is the gathering for all who recognize our need for God's grace and who are searching for God's presence and power in the midst of our lives."
Sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ is something that is born new and fresh with each new day, according to Beavers.
"The favorite part of my job at Getwell Church is seeing people come to faith in Jesus. That never gets old."
