A DeSoto County couple have been arrested and are facing charges in connection with an alleged sex crime.
The DeSoto County Sheriff's Department late Monday afternoon announced the arrests of Steven Lee Colby, age 23, and Meara Carpenter, age 18.
Colby and Carpenter are being held in the DeSoto County Adult Detention Center. Colby has been charged with fondling by a person in a position of trust. Carpenter, reported to be a girlfriend of Colby, was charged with molestation, touching a child for lustful purposes.
No bond has been set for either person and no initial court appearance date has been set as of Monday evening.
Colby reportedly was a substitute instructor for DeSoto County Schools and the arrests came after a student alerted school officials about a questionable text message sent to students.
However, Chief Inspector Roger Hutchins said in the information announcing the arrests that the case was a continuing investigation and he could not provide any further information.
DeSoto County Schools did release a statement after the arrests, which read as follows:
"A student notified a Lake Cormorant High School guidance counselor that a Kelly Services employee sent an inappropriate text to a group of students," the statement read. "After investigating the situation, school officials contacted law enforcement. DeSoto County Schools' number one priority is the safety of our students and staff."
Kelly Services provides substitute services to the school district. No other details about what exactly happened to cause deputies to arrest Colby and Carpenter were immediately available.
