The DeSoto County Board of Supervisors will call a special meeting at 8 a.m. Dec. 27 by which under state statute they will direct the DeSoto County Election Commission to add the office of DeSoto County Coroner to the November general election ballot.

DeSoto County Administrator Vanessa Lynchard said under Mississippi law, an election of a coroner must be set 10 days following the death of a county coroner in Mississippi.

Longtime DeSoto County Coroner Jeffery Pounders died this past Sunday, Dec. 17 at the age of 63.

"The position of coroner will be added to the general election ballot in November," Lynchard said. "The board will ultimately have to appoint someone."

No appointment, however, will be made at the Dec. 27 meeting.

Lynchard said longtime deputy coroners Billy Baldwin and Daimon Weaver will continue to serve in their regular capacities in the wake of Pounders' death.
