Bench donated to honor Hawkins

First Regional Library in Hernando has received a bench in memory of Vera C. Hawkins, who passed away in March. Hawkins was a public school educator in Hernando and DeSoto County from the early 1950s until her retirement in 1992, a teacher of adult literacy classes and tutor. Hawkins also was the founder of the Hernando Concerned Community Volunteers, a VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) chapter, and was on the board of directors for the local Boys and Girls Club. Jesse Pool, Hernando Public Library director accepted the donation from Hawkins’ son Keith and Primerica Richmond Consulting Group with regional vice president Vincent Richmond. Members of the group’s team and other family and friends were on hand for the presentation on Wednesday, May 1.
