Baptist-DeSoto celebrates Veterans Day

Center Hill Elementary School students proudly display their $1,000 check donation as the school collecting the most Shoeboxes for Soldiers during the recent campaign climaxed during the Veterans Day celebration at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven. Center Hill students gathered 890 shoeboxes of toiletries and treats for local men and women serving in the Armed Forces overseas, part of Mid-South Project Package. Pleasant Hill Elementary was second among the schools taking part in the annual project and received a $750 check donation from the hospital and Overpark Elementary School was third and received a $500 check donation. The event also featured songs sung by the students and comments from state Sen. David Parker (R-Olive Branch). Among the veterans who attended was Alvin Sides, age 92, a paratrooper in World War II, as well as Joan Davis, age 84, a Korean War veteran who also served in Germany and remains active as a volunteer at Baptist-DeSoto.
