An alleged bank robber is recovering from injuries he received after being shot and wounded during a shootout with authorities in Tunica County.
DeSoto County Sheriff's Department officials were advised of the incident, which occurred about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The individual was arrested and taken into custody shortly after the incident by officers at the scene. He was transported to Regional One in Memphis, also known as "The Med." His condition had not been released by authorities at press time on Wednesday.
The intersection of Highway 61 and Highway 4 was closed in Tunica following the incident.
Police said they were dispatched to Southern Bancorp on Highway 1 South at about 11: 30 a.m. in reference to an armed robbery in the Mississippi Delta city of Cleveland.
WREG in Memphis reported that a black male walked into the building with a handgun and demanded money from the drawer. The suspect then took an undisclosed amount of money and ran away.
Investigators identified the suspect’s vehicle as a maroon Chevrolet SUV. The Cleveland Police Department contacted the Greenville Police Department to report they were pursuing a vehicle matching that description.
The pursuit eventually ended in Tunica, and officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect.
No injuries were reported in the bank robbery, and no officers were injured in the shooting.
