The term internet first appeared in 1982, with the DARPA launch of the Internet Protocol (IP).

Before the internet there was the ARPANET, a project funded by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) in 1969. The ARPANET was both an experiment in reliable networking.

There are still “gumps” out there who suffer from internet and computer addiction. Y’all grow up, it’s not new any more. It has stopped being an oddity.

There are some things on the internet that allow “regular people” who are prone to unhealthy habits to indulge their fantasies in the privacy of their home. So, they don’t hurt anyone except their spouse and children which they don’t seem to think that matters.

There are several different types of internet addiction. There is the cyber-relationship addiction which is involved with social networking, chat rooms and messaging to the point that their relationship with their family and face-to-face friends suffer.

There is the compulsion involving, gambling, game-playing, stock-trading and some get all wound up in sites like eBay where their financial situation suffers.

The addiction that is the most appalling of all to me is the sex thing. This is a sickness. It’s called pornography addiction and the internet is a candy shop for these “hooligans who are hopping to hell in a handbasket.” And — they are not necessarily young men or women either. It is extremely easy to log into these sites. I have hit the wrong button on occasion and opened a site I didn’t mean to open and been thrown into shock by having the some hochie-mama’s  unmentionable staring me in the face. Eau-u-u! I’m not prejudiced, I don’t want to see the other gender’s stuff, either.

Short sex films of the most depraved sort are available. Believe me, if you want to find them, you can. If you want to access them, you can. That being said, parents beware. Know what your children are doing. Use the parental controls.

Addiction means “enslaved by” or “bound to.” Addiction is: craving for the object of addiction, loss of control over its use, and continuing involvement with it despite adverse consequences.

Tips for dealing with internet addiction:

_ Ask yourself, “What am I missing out on when I spend so much time on the internet?” Write down these activities and decrease your internet time to pursue some of them.

_ Set reasonable use goals and stick to them. Take frequent breaks, at least five minutes each hour, and do some other activity.

_ Alter your routine to break your usage patterns. If you spend evenings on the internet, start limiting your use to mornings.

_ Seek out friends and acquaintances who “couldn’t care less” about the internet. Take time to appreciate the fact that all life is not yet online.

_ Stay connected to the offline world. Visit newsstands, book and music stores and participate in entertainment such as museums, music and live theater. Novels and poetry readings are hard to experience online.

_ Treat the internet as a tool. Stay focused on the fact that it is a means to an end. Plan your strategy — whether you’re looking for information or entertainment — with the end in mind and you’ll save valuable time.

Tips to helping others with internet addiction

_ Be a good role model. Manage the internet and computer use in your own life well.

_ Introduce the internet addict to other people who handle their internet use sensibly.

_ Get your friend involved in non-internet related interests.

_ Talk to your friend about your concerns with their internet use.

_ Support their desire for change if they think they have a problem.

_ Encourage them to seek professional counseling.
