Flag Day observed today

Today is "Flag Day" across the United States and in some towns and cities, officials are showing their colors by displaying "Old Glory."

Hernando Mayor Tom Ferguson is no exception.

"We've put out a few flags at the courthouse and at city hall," Ferguson said. "We want people to know what it represents. I just think that in today's society, we're losing on what things we were taught in the past<' said Ferguson, adding that he meant patriotism and love for one's country.

"I'm not sure its (Flag Day) even taught in our schools anymore. The Flag stands for freedom. It's not in many countries where that is true anymore."

On May 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing a national Flag Day on June 14. Many Americans celebrate Flag Day by displaying the "Red, White and Blue" in front of homes and businesses.
