The Mississippi State Department of Health, Office of Tobacco Control is seeking qualified
applicants for a Special Projects Officer IV position located in Desoto County. This office
works to prevent the initiation of tobacco use, enhance tobacco cessation efforts, eliminate
tobacco-related disparities, and eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke.
Annual Starting Salary:
Qualifications: Graduation from a standard four-year high school or equivalent (GED); AND
Nine (9) years of related experience( ), three (3) years of which must
include line or functional supervision.
Substitution Statement: Related education and related experience may be substituted on an
equal basis, except there shall be no substitution for the three (3) years of line or functional
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree from an accredited four-year or university in Public
Health, Public Policy, Health Education or closely related field; knowledge and experience
working with tobacco control policy, community health, coalition building, grassroots
organization, and quality assurance engagement. Additionally, the applicant needs to be
adept at public speaking, providing technical assistance and training, superb writing skills,
the ability to research topics and ideas, make informed decisions, create documents, and build
and maintain spreadsheets, proficient in Microsoft Office Software (Outlook, Explorer, Excel,
Publisher, PowerPoint), and highly organized with the ability to take direction from multiple
members of management.
