Davis accuses Childers of pulling out of televised debate

OXFORD — Democratic U.S. Representative Travis Childers and his Republican opponent Greg Davis have agreed to a joint appearance on Oct. 15 in Oxford to address issues affecting the 1st Congressional District.
The event will be held at the Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics at Ole Miss.
The 4:30 p.m. forum will be moderated by Jonathan Scott, news editor of the Oxford Eagle newspaper.
The event is open to the public, and representatives of news organizations will ask questions of the candidates.
Childers and Davis appeared together at an earlier debate at the Overby Center last spring when they were running in a special election to fill the remainder of the term vacated by now U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker after Wicker was appointed to a Senate seat previously held by former U.S. Sen. Trent Lott.
Childers won the special election in May and has represented 1st Congressional District since that time.
Davis, the mayor of Southaven, is challenging Childers again in the Nov. 4 general election for a full term.
Both candidates will make campaign stops in DeSoto County on Friday.
Davis will appear Friday at noon on the DeSoto campus of Northwest Mississippi Community College.
Childers is slated to make an appearance at Coleman’s Barbecue in Hernando between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Friday.
Davis and Childers have been unable to agree on previous debates or forums featuring the two candidates.
Davis said he challenged Childers to a series of debates, including a proposed televised debate from Tupelo. That televised debate was eventually scrapped after several date changes.
Davis accused Childers of backing out of an agreement with Memphis television station WREG.
We sent out a letter requesting three debates,” Davis said Wednesday. “He backed out of the (WREG) debate.”
Childers, through his spokesman, denied that allegation.
“For the Davis campaign to say that we backed out of a debate is unfair - it’s a lie,” Childers spokesman Dana Edelstein said Wednesday. “They never requested us to be there,” Edelstein said of the proposed WREG debate. “The Congressman is very much looking forward to participating in the Oct. 15 debate.”
Davis said he, too, looked forward to the Oxford appearance by the two men.
“We are looking forward to letting the voters take a look at his voting record, and see where he stands on the issues,” Davis said.

" Can someone answer a question? Is Childers a Repub or Demoncrat. It's seems as though his platform of pro life, pro gun and smaller goverment is used by another party. Oh yeah, I forgot this is politics. "

" Childers is a Republicrat. That means that he'll be anything and say anything the supporters want until he actually gets into office. "

" After this election, Congressman Childers should have the seniority of five term members, having defeated Davis five times. I'm with wicker; Mayor Davis should worry about Southaven and gracefully pull out of this humiliating series of defeats. With this economy, he will have plenty of fish to fry as Mayor. "

" Childers and Davis only faced each other twice. And Davis is on the verge of beating Childers. Mark it.
Davis will benefit from a full electorate this time. McCain plus Wicker GOTV help Davis across the district. Childers won with an electorate that was a distortion of the district's population and normal voting patterns.
Childers ran as country-cornbread but he has hung with Barney Frank and voted with Nancy Pelosi while in Washington. His best bud in Booneville is Joey Langston and he's lost several friends over his voting record and breaking his word in not staying out of the Prentiss County Chancery Clerk race. Childers has two assets in this race or he would be toast: the Spring (he won plus the other crap) and he's a fantastic liar (and lots of people believe liars).
Cheers. "

" Tupelo you are right, Childers is beat! I am absolutely amazed over here, but Davis winning is all you hear. Davis' has made up an ubelievable amount of ground on our (eastern) side. He has put together the best grassroots organization in Northeast MS that we have had since our Wicker 1994 & Haley 2003 wins. Pontotoc you better be working on helping us with Roger's turnout over here if you truly are with us on Wicker. Davis is in better shape than Roger right now. We have got to work harder on Roger's race. "

" Davis will be beat and will be beat again in the mayors race...He has no leadership skills. He has proven this the way he cryed over the problems with the county. "
