HERNANDO — A shoplifting couple believed to have targeted Wal-Mart stores in three states were recently caught in the act in Hernando.
Police arrested Robert Hollinger, 36, and Alisha Shackelford, 22, both of Horn Lake, on Tuesday night after security personnel at the Wal-Mart at Commerce and McIngvale found them trying to leave with unpaid merchandise.
“They had $750 worth of fishing lures,” Det. Michael White said about the couple that set off a theft-prevention alarm and raised suspicions as they entered the store.
White said he believes the couple, that has since bonded out of jail, planned on selling the tackle to acquaintances for drug money. They had “shopping lists” of items such as DVDs and cigarettes for other people, as well as what appeared to be prescription narcotics in their vehicle, he said.
The alleged drugs must be analyzed before any related charges are filed against Hollinger or Shackelford, who now face one felony shoplifting charge each.
White said additional shoplifting charges are possible for both Hollinger and Shackelford - who also was charged with contempt of court - from agencies in Wynne, Ark., Memphis and Southaven, where they allegedly hit other Wal-Mart stores.
Hollinger also may be charged with violation of probation as Tara Booth, spokesperson for the Mississippi Department of Corrections, said Hollinger was released from prison July 30 on three years of probation for residential burglary and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Likewise, Shackelford could face adjudication on a grand larceny charge to which she pleaded guilty in July and received five years of probation on August 20. The penalty for grand larceny is up to 10 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
