Future unclear for RiverKings' McClelland
By Ron Caldwell/Times Sports Editor
SOUTHAVEN - RiverKing head coach Kevin McClelland is frustrated and disappointed with the way that his team finished the 2007-08 Central Hockey League playoffs.
He is also uncertain about his future as coach of the Mississippi RiverKings.
"I don't know right now," said McClelland on Friday when asked whether he expected to be back next season. "I need to sit down and think about the future."
Also, McClelland said that he is scheduled to meet next week with team officials about the future of the team.
Repeated calls to RiverKing team officials went unreturned on F_riday.
McClelland, who won four Stanley Cup titles as a NHL player with the Edmonton Oilers, just completed his third year at the helm of the team.
The RiverKings narrowly missed the playoffs after his inaugural campaign and made it to the Northern Conference finals where they lost to eventual champion Colorado last year.
The 'Kings were bounced in the first round of the CHL playoffs two weeks ago.
After winning game one of the best-of-three series against the Texas Brahmas at the DeSoto Civic Center, the team lost two straight in Fort Worth.
"That's the problem with those short, best-of-three series," said McClelland. "It was really disappointing especlally in game three down there. They had 11 power plays to our four."
McClelland has been under contract with the RiverKings but he didn't sign an extension earlier this year.
"I'm going to reflect on the season and see where we are. I was proud of the way that we finished the regular season to make the playoffs. And, we've had back-to-back 39-win seasons, which isn't bad. But, right now I can't say whether I'll be back next year or not."
